Umuganda

Every month in Rwanda they have a day dedicated to community service. People take time to serve their community and this can be done in different ways. All the interns from BYU were invited to do community service at a village on our way to the Akegera National Park. We helped the villagers build a home for orphans. The Rwandans were very welcoming and excited that we wanted to help them. We helped by carrying bags of sand from one place to another. We made many trips and it was hot and the bags were heavy. Others helped by fetching water. After the service activity, everyone made a circle and the Rwandan's started dancing and singing. It was fun because they sung songs in kinyarwanda. After they asked the American interns to sing some songs as well and we did simple songs like "if your happy and you know it clap your hands" and the villagers loved them! We were very grateful for their kindness and they were grateful for our participation.
